Accessible by design

A book for every reader.

Every one of ZAK's books comes in print and as an ebook — and in editions most textbooks never make: dyslexia-friendly, large print, an accessible PDF a screen reader can follow, colour-blind-safe diagrams throughout, a Teacher Edition, and write-in workbooks. Same content, same questions and mark schemes, made for how you read.

  • 1.5× line spacing, extra letter spacing (0.04 em) and wider word spacing
  • No italics anywhere — emphasis is bold

Large-print edition

Readers with low vision.

  • A4, one column, 16 pt body text with 22 pt line spacing
  • Headings from 18 to 34 pt; code in 14 pt
  • Every diagram, question and scheme of the standard edition

Print on request from the books desk; the ebook goes up to 24 px text.

Colour-blind safe — in every edition

Readers with colour-vision deficiency — about 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women.

  • Diagrams use the Okabe–Ito palette, designed to stay distinct for every common colour-vision deficiency
  • Colour is never the only cue: every diagram role also has its own line pattern and glyph, so pages read in greyscale and on a photocopy
  • Exam Heat tiers carry a letter (B C R O) as well as a colour
  • The ebook's colour-blind mode adds patterns to highlights

Standards: Okabe & Ito, Color Universal Design

Built into every edition — nothing to order.

Accessible PDF (PDF/UA)

Screen-reader users and print-disabled readers.

  • Tagged PDF: real headings, reading order, lists and tables a screen reader can follow
  • Alt text on every figure
  • Built and checked against PDF/UA-1

Standards: PDF/UA-1 (ISO 14289-1)

On request from the books desk for readers who need it.

Partners who distribute ebooks through their own platforms.

  • Reflowable EPUB 3 with structural navigation and a table of contents
  • schema.org accessibility metadata (access mode, features, hazards) in the package — the basis for European Accessibility Act conformance
